Four racers have caused a brief interruption in the final of the Football World Cup between France and Croatia. Shortly thereafter, the Russian political punk group Pussy Riot announced on the social media that the women on the pitch had been their members.
“Four members of Pussy Riot in the final of the World Cup,” the group wrote on Facebook. To this end, she made a list of demands: Political prisoners should be released, arrests at rallies should cease, the country needed more political competition. From the police, there was initially no opinion.
The four women wore uniforms reminiscent of police officers, and flitted happily in the middle of the final on the field – but were quickly caught by security guards. One of the activists previously managed to clap with French superstar Kylian Mbappe. In her letter, Pussy Riot called the action “The cop comes into play”.
The Argentine referee Nestor Pitana did not seem to notice the speedsters at first, but then stopped the game for a short time. After the security forces had led the disturbers from the square, the meeting was continued.
The punk group Pussy Riot has in the past repeatedly staged Kremlin-critical actions in public places. In 2012, three activists were arrested after a “punk prayer” in a church, convicted of “hooliganism from religious hatred” and later pardoned.
